22-year-old Andres Vereecke (Lembeke) won the Belgian Indoor Championship at the Christmas Jumping in Malines. By winning, he follows in the footsteps of his father, and three times Belgian Indoor Champion, Koen Vereecke.
Exceptionally young top 3
No doubt yet another group of strong show jumping riders is standing at the forefront of a promising professional career. The top 3 riders of the Belgian Indoor Championships were no older than 22. The silver medal went to Thibeau Spits (18), who, earlier that day, was named Talent of the Year by Paardensport Vlaanderen. 21-year-old Gilles Thomas claimed third place.
8 competitors made it to the jump-off. Andres Vereecke was fifth go. He rode the Belgian Warmblood (BWP) Igor van de Wittemoere (Cooper Vd Heffinck X Orlando). The duo cleared the course in 37.88 seconds, which was not only 1,5 seconds faster than Gilles Thomas and Calleryama, but was also enough to claim the final victory in the Belgian Indoor Championship. The only rider who managed to briefly pose a real threat to his resplendent performance was Nicola Philippaerts. He finishid in 37,43 seconds with his BWP horse l’Adore van het Schaek but had the last jump down. This resulted in Talent of the Year Thibeau Spits and his horse Classic Touch becoming the second best combination in the competition with a clear round in 38 seconds.
Andres Vereecke was – of course - very happy with his performance: “It’s amazing to claim the title of Belgian Indoor Champion. I already knew I had the fastest horse in the competition, but my dad also gave me some important tips based on what he had seen during the rides of the previous competitors. So I knew that if I would not make any mistakes, Igor wouldn’t either.
Earlier this year, Andres and Igor also won the 4* GP in Liège and the 3* GP in Rheims: “I have been riding Igor for 2 years now. He is in the ownership of my uncle and was bred by Erik Van Nieuwenhuyse. It’s a very sensitive horse, but it didn’t take long for us to bond and since then he would go through fire for me.” Next year you will certainly be able to see them competing in some nice 5* competitions.
