10 of the 41 participants stayed clear in the first round of the Prize Topsport Vlaanderen. After an exciting jump off, the victory was for Jos Lansink and the nine year old Zerlin M, a KWPN by Berlin x Concorde. This was the first GP at 5* level for the combination. Jos: “During the CSI3* of Maastricht I had to give up after two faults in the GP. The paddock was in the middle of the event and Zerlin was extremely tense then. In Mechelen, the paddock is in a tent but it is quite big, so you have a chance to work without tensions. Zerlin M has been at my stables for two years now and was ridden by Ruben Romp and Guillaume Batillat. Until now, we were concentrating on his formation and never rode to win. After Guillaume left, I took over. Maybe I should have done that sooner because he's got such a wonderful mentality, I think he could get really far. I saw Gregory Wathelet's jump off on the tv screen in the paddock and knew I had to give everything I had if I wanted to win. During the jump off, everything went as planned. I am very pleased with this victory because you always want to better for your home public, especially in Mechelen were they really support you. This was one of the best days of 2013.” The entire podium was Belgian with a second place for Gregory Wathelet (Conrad) and a third place for Gudrun Patteet (Sea Coast Ferly).
